Job Description
We are looking for an experienced journalist to lead our coverage of Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco.
The region where the 2011 Arab Spring revolts began is still in the midst of an uncertain transition, especially in Algeria, where massive popular protests have forced long-time President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to drop his plans of running for a fifth term. The vast gas and oil-rich country witnessed a brutal civil war in the 1990s. New unrest would have serious implications across the region and into Europe, which depends heavily on Algeria for its gas supplies.
In Tunisia, the conditions that helped spark revolution eight years ago persist, especially in the rural south. Pushing through economic reforms to curb public spending will be a delicate task. Jihadists returning from Libya, Syria and Iraq continue to pose a threat following 2015 attacks that devastated the tourism industry.
Morocco presents itself as the region’s most stable and investor friendly country. The Casablanca bourse is Africa’s third largest and is thriving but more economic reforms are due. While the palace remains the ultimate authority in the kingdom, social and political tensions remain. In the south, the Western Sahara dispute has seen a revival in tensions with the Polisario movement looking for independence.
